Introduction to the Joint Legal Education Programme

The University of Hong Kong (HKU) and the University of British Columbia (UBC) have established a joint legal education programme, which allows students to complete two degrees in two jurisdictions in a total of five years. This programme opens doors for candidates to practice law in both Canada and Hong Kong.

Programme Structure

Under this joint LLB-JD programme, students will complete 180 HKU credits by their third year of study, with a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of at least 3.1. The curriculum structure is as follows:

• Year 1: HKU, 60 HKU credits
• Year 2: HKU, 60 HKU credits
• Year 3: HKU, 60 HKU credits
• Year 4: UBC, 30 UBC credits
• Year 5: UBC, 30 UBC credits

Programme Requirements

To be eligible for this programme, students must have successfully completed:

• 180 HKU credits
• A cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of at least 3.1
• Specific course requirements, including:
  • Compulsory core courses
  • Designed Research Course (DRC) requirement
  • University required courses
  • Disciplinary electives (for admission in 2024/25 cohort and thereafter)

Quota of Admission

Up to five students may be admitted to the programme each year.

Application Process

The following documents must be submitted to UBC by the application deadline of January 31:

• Completed application form
• Personal Statement (no more than 750 words)
• Transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended
• Two Academic Letters of Reference
• Letter of Permission from HKU

Tuition Fees

Tuition fees for non-international students (Canadian citizens) are CAD 436.06 per credit, while tuition fees for international students are CAD 1,365.66 per credit. Tuition and fees are subject to change.

Programme Details

This joint legal education programme is not an exchange programme. Students will be required to pay UBC tuition fees while studying at UBC for the 4th and 5th years. They will be required to complete 60 credits of courses in UBC to fulfill the requirements of their JD programme.

Additional Information

Upon successful completion of the two-year JD study at UBC, students will obtain HKU LLB and UBC JD respectively from HKU and UBC. Students may apply for the PCLL programme to pursue the qualification in Hong Kong as a barrister or solicitor.
